Little is known of Giovanni Paolo Foscarini, other than that he was a respected lutenist, guitarist, composer, and theorist. The lute was not as well-regarded outside France, and the guitar, outside Spain and Italy; musicians who played these instruments seldom attracted more than a fraction of the salaries that went to gambists, violinists, harpsichordists, singers, and wind musicians. The only ones who were lucky managed it by snaring the personal attention of some artistically inclined member of the nobility. We have no evidence that Foscarini was that lucky. His publications were influential, however, and evolved guitar playing style, as well as providing works remain attractive, today.
